LEAKAGE IN SEWER
TROUBLE AT TAKAPUNA OUTFALL PIPE DAMAGED EFFECT OF HEAVY SEAS The action of heavy seas has resulted in displacement of the sewer outfall which extends 500 ft. out into the sea at Black Rock, between Takapuna and Milford. A crack has appeared in the iron sewer and a small quantity of sewage has been escaping. Following a report by a diver, the Takapuna Borough Council decided last evening to consider the best means of restoring the pipe. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, said blame for the trouble belonged to the council which had had the sewer constructed some years ago. He had made a warning at the time that the pipe was being laid insecurely, and had urged that a diver be sent down to inspect the seabed before the pipe, an iron structure fully 26in. in diameter, was placed in position. In his report to the council, the diver stated that erosion had taken place underneath the pipe, which had been forced out of position by successive storms. Two members of the council, Messrs. J. Waddell and L. H. Titchener, took opportunity some days ago to inspect the damage first hand, by donning diving suits and descending some 20ft. into the sea. Mr. Waddell said although a leak had been discovered, that was no need for public alarm. It was necessary, however, that remedial measures should be put in hand immediately. The problem will be further discussed by the Works Committee.
