BOARD'S LOSS OF POWER
RESIGNATION OF MEMBER EDUCATION CONTROL SYSTEM "During I he past few years I have felt I cannot retain my self-respect as a member of this board as the power to serve has been taken away," said Mr. 11. S. W. King at. a meeting of tho Auckland Education Board yesterday. Mr. King, who has been on the board for 14 years, did not seek re-election at the recent elections. Mr. said much of the board s authority had been taken away from it by the Education Department. "Wo put Hi) a. tight against centralisation, but it has come about," he said. Mr. King said i ho had found that it was impossible for j him to carry out. what ho intended when he consented to nomination for election to tho board. In addition to the department usurping the board s powers, the amount of work done by the executive committee of the board reduced the prestige of the ordinary member. Members expressed regret that Mr. King had decided to retire. "1 understood that'tlie board's loss of power partly accounted for it." said Mr. E. ' . banks. "I myself feel that it is hardly worth while travelling 80 miles to attend meetings.'' The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said Mr. King had always taken a keen interest in education matters. Ho had fulfilled a useful public service, his record including a term as Mayor of Devonport. It was decided to place on record appreciation of Mr. King's services to education in tho Auckland district.
