BOXING RING
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS JOHNS AND HUGHES MATCHED Record entries are likely to be received by the Northern Boxing Association for its annual amateur championship carnival, to bo staged at tho Town Hail on August 22, 23 and 24. The various gymnasiums havo been well patronised during the winter months and there should be renewed enthusiasm from now on. Archie Hughes, feather-weight boxing champion of New South Wales, has issued a' challenge to Harry Johns, of Auckland, for the light-weight championship of New Zealand. Tho match will be decided at tho Town Hall on September 5, under the control of the Northern Boxing Association. The Whangarei Association held a very successful carnival last Wednesday evening, tho Town Hall being crowded. Somo very fine contests were witnessed. Apart from representatives from the various centres in Iho North, a team went up from Auckland under tho charge of Mr. V. Hogg. Its' members met with very solid opposition, however, the only one to gain a success being W. Hogg, who competed in tho light-weight division. Throughout the six two-minute rounds Hogg's cleverness prevented his opponent from landing a clean blow. A special cup was given for tho most scientific boxer at. the tournev, and why it did not go to Hogg is best" known to the judges themselves. Boxing followers will regret the death on Monday of D. Gordon, as tho result of a motor-cycle accident. He was an Auckland amateur light-weight, who will be remembered as tho opponent of Johnny Roper, of Taumarunui, in a special challenge bout at the lost boxing carnival at the Town Hall. '
