FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE: HERALD DEFENCE OF THE COLONY The following are extracts froiii th© New Zealand Herald of August 2, 1882: The Government, after much consideration, has made several important alterations in tha former proposals for the defence of the Colony. Each of the four principal ports is to have a torpedoboat, and guns mounted cn earthworks. Detachments of the Armed Constabulary are to be trained as artillerymen, and at each port men are to be-trained to work torpedoes. The arrangements made by the Government appear to be suitable. The annual report of the New Zealand Armed Constabulary shows that the polica protection afforded, in proportion to population, is less in New Zealand than in of the Australian colonies. In New Zealand there is one const ablo to 1084 persons ; in Victoria, the lowest, one to 774; and in Queensland, the highest, one to 425. A cablegram from Sydney announces the death of Mr. Henry Kendall, the wellknown Australian poet and author, from phthisis, at the age of 40 years.
