SCHOOL COMMITTEES
ASSOCIATION SOCIAL HELD VALUE OF LOCAL CONTROL! A largely-attended social •was held by the Auckland Primary School Committees* Association on Saturday evening at the Y.M.C.A. The president, Mr. A. Roberts, presided, Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, and Mr. J. W. McGechie, chairman of the Auckland Headmasters' Association, also being present. Mr. Roberts said the entertainment waa principally the result of tha organisation carried out by women members of the executive, and it was felt a good purpose was served in having representatives present of other educational organisations. Cooperation was essential in education; Mr. Burng said the Education Board appreciated the work done by the association. He considered the board to be" a reflection of the school committees, and he would regret to see the aboltion of the present methods of controlling education. Local control had many important advantages over centralisation in a department, and the real interest takon by parents in the welfare of their children was of great value. Mr. Burns concluded by paying a tribute to the general excellence of the teachers in the Auckland Province, Mr. McGechie replying. A musical programme was given by Mrs. P. Owen, Johnson and Messrs. L. Russell, Asquith, Isherwood and Zante Wood, Miss Grassie being accompanist.
