FARMERS' MOTOR LICENCES
Sir, —It is tirno attention was given to the matter of altering the law in connection with traffic licences for farmers' motor-lorries. A farmer uses his lorry once or twice a week u or perhaps his lorry may be idle for weeks at a time, and yet it is demanded of him to pay the 3arne fee as a carrier, who is constantly on the road. The farmer has his rates also to pay, toward road maintenance. I trust that the Commissioner of Transport will give this matter his consideration, and then I am sure farmers will be exempted from this unfair charge. It will be said that farmers will compete with carriers and that market gardeners will next want exemption. Why not do away altogether with heavy traffic licences and the numerous inspectors that will then be unnecessary, and add the amount to the benzino tax. Then the man who uses the benzine, being the man who is using the road, is rightfully paying. I am sure farmers do not object to paying their fair share, but having to pay ill odd per month for using their lorries occasionally is quite wrong. 11. Coi'Lii.
