OFFENCES BY FARMER

JURY'S VERDICT OF GUILTY Two charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16 years were preferred against William Orr, aged 23, farmer, in the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Smith and a jury. The offences were alleged to have taken place at YVhakatane. The hearing lasted all day. Accused entered the witness box and made a complete denial of the charges. A number of witnesses for tho defence said accused was elsewhere at the time of tho alleged offences. After a retirement of an hour and a-half tho jury returned with a verdict of guilty, with a strong ; recommendation to mercy on tho ground of ill-health. Orr was remanded for sentence.
