RUG AND AN OVERCOAT MAN'S OFFENCE AT ROTORUA [by TELEGRAPH —-OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Monday In the Rotorua Magistrate's Court today Francis G. R. Herbert was charged with stealing a rug and a leather overcoat, the property of R. Sibley, from a motorcar. The goods were valued at £3. It was stated in evidence that in the middle of June Sibley parked his car near a private hotel and a rug and overcoat were stolen from it. Later Sibley saw a Maori wearing the coat, and on being questioned the Maori said lie had purchased it from a second-hand dealer. The Maori's statement was found to be correct. Accused had given himself up to tlia police last night and made a statement that he had stolen the goods and had first sold tho rug to a second-hand dealer. Later he had sold tho coat and had bought the rug back, after which ho went to Taupo. The magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, on referring to a list of accused's previous convictions, said that accused had been given a chance beforo, but. apparently he had not made the best use of it. A sentence of 12 months' reformative treatment was imposed.
