MAN'S NINETY CONVICTIONS LAST CHANCE TO LEAVE CITY "This man has 90 convictions and during the last nine years he has been in and out of gaol nil the time," said DetectiveSergeant Kelly, when Peter O'Malley, aged 49, a Scottish seaman, pleaded guilty in the Police Court yesterday to a charge of drunkenness. "I don't know what can be done for him." added Mr. Kelly. "Ha has eight convictions already this year." "Half a minute. 1 would like to have a bit of a talk myself," interjected accused from the dock. "Give mo a chance and I will be out of town in an hour." The Magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean: You seexa to have had a good many chances. Accused: I will leave the country if you will give me ft chance. Mr. Kelly: He has had nine years in which to leavo and has never gone. Accused: How can I leave? I have been in prison about eight years out of the nine I have been hore. Mr. McKean: "Whose fault is that? Accused: Look here, let me go now. and if you see me again can shoot me or give me 12 months. Now, that s a fair offer. . . Remarking that accused's convictions were all for drunkenness and for offences arising out of drunkenness, and were not for dishonesty, the magistrate entered a conviction without penalty. "If you are here again to-morrow I will give you three months," warned the magistrate, as accused left the dock.
