SENDING OF TELEGRAMS
NEW TRANSMITTING MACHINE TESTS IN NEW ZEALAND Experiments are being conducted by the Post and Telegraph Department with the teleprinter, a new machine for transmitting typewritten telegraphic messages which is operating in the United States. The teleprinter can despatch and print a page of typed message without human intervention, the resulting" message appearing like an ordinary page jiroduced by a typewriter, while, if desired, the same message can be sent to more than one station on the same wire at the same time. It is believed that the machine would be of greatest use on country circuits and it is now being tested at several offices in the South. The system in common operation in country centres at present is the manual morse apparatus, while the Murray multiplex system- of sending messages- printed on a continuous tape is the method . be r tween the main centres. It is not considered likely that tlie teleprinter will come into common operation in New Zealand for some time, even if it is found satisfactory, as the present methods are able to cope with the amount of traffic handled.
