HOCKEY
DEVONPORT SHIELD CONTEST HONOURS EQUALLY DIVIDED SOMERVILLE AND UNIVERSITY Tho first round of the Devonport Shield contest, tho second senior grade hockey competition of the season, was played under good conditions at Rcmuera on Saturday afternoon. University, which had drawn the previous week with Somerville, winners of tho Davis Cup, again forced tho champion team to concede half honours. After a closely contested gamo an equalising scoro was secured right on time. North Shore, fielding a much stronger team than on tho previous Saturday, defeated Mount Eden by fivo goals to two in a rather ragged game. Owing to the withdrawal of Wesley fiom senior grade, St. Luke's had a bye. Before the club matches a practice match •va3 played to assist Mr. W. Newsham, solo selector, in choosing tho Auckland team to defend tho New Zealand Challenge Shield against Poverty Bay next Saturday week. SOLID DEFENCE CHANGE IN FORWARDS Patches of very fine combined work alternated with ragged play in tho drawn match between Somerville and University. The absence of C. Watts and F. Wellbourne upset tho Somerville forward line and E. Watts waa given a gruelling task in trying to keep his van together. Tho University team played a very solid game, tho defence being outstanding. Soon after the Btart D. Smith, Somervillo's right wing, took tho ball down the field and a pass to Seccombe placed Somerville in a good position After a strenuous tussle right in the goalmouth Lainb broke clear and the University van reached the other circle. A cross-pass waa intercepted by Gurr, who sent tho SomerI villo forwards away and E. Glanville finished off with a fast shot, which beat Crawley. R Smith, University's left wing, and Ross were working hard and finally the Somerville circle was invaded. Radcliffe, taking a pass in mid-air, shot, but the ball went astray. Both forward lines were seen i in a series of fast attacks, which were blocked by good fullback work. Gradually University took control and by means of continual attacks, chiefly down the left, the ball was kept in Somerville'e quarters for some minutes. The defence was finally beaten by N. liroun, whose shot went in off Vaile's puds, equalising the score a couple of minutes before half-time. E. Watts led the Somerville forwards into University's territory at the opening of the second spell, but tho ball went aver the back line Don and A. Broun initiated several attacks down the right flank and Vaile was called on to save. Over-hard passing loal chances, the ball going out of control Nevertheless, the students were able to keep play in Somervillc's quarters for some time until Smytheman and Glanville broke past the University halves. A corner was conceded. but the defence held and Ross shifted play to the other end in a fast run. C Smith. Somerville's right fullback, was ready for him and Somerville again took charge. An attack down the right drove the students back and E. Watts sent o high pass to Smytheman, whose shot, however, went aslray University again took up the offensive, R. Smith and Ross racing down the left, but a shot by Ross rebounded from a side-post and Gardner cleared. The Somerville forwards worked hard to carry the ball through, sound defence saving. Finally Wilmott saw a chance and raced in. Crawley, in saving, carried the ball with him and Somerville wr.-s awarded a penalty bully, which E. Watts turned to account. The Somerville forwards, led by E. atts, were battling hard and Crawley made a good « a ve> when a pass from D. Smith was taken by E Watts and directed into the goalmouth. Browne sent the University forward line away and Lamb, in a splendid solo run went right through and made the final score University, 2; Somerville. 2. Mesere. E. J Hewitt and A. Williams were referees.
HARD HITTING MT. EDEN AND NORTH SHORE Hard hitting characterised the rather ragged game in which North Shore defeated Mount Eden by five goals to two. Mount Eden was the first to score and the game was very even until half-time, when the score was two all. In the second spell, however, superior forward combination gave North Shore victory. At the opening of the game, Ash led an attack which penetrated the North Shore circle, and the goalmouth was bombarded Rankin made several good saves. but finally Clarke opened Mount Eden's score with a fnst shot. North Shore took a turn at attacking and a sortie up the left drove Mount Eden back. Logan sent the Mount Eden forwards away and again the North Shore goal was threatened. Allen intercepted a pass, saving the situation with a long clearing ehot, and Monteith raced down the field .with the ball. Mainland did not clear decisively, but Logan got into position and saved. North Shore kept up the pressure. A few momenta later Montieth, from a penalty corner, swung the baU into the net. equalising the score. North Shore returned to the attack and Cox took a shot which failed. From the_ bully. Fletcher broke away and the North Shore circle was invaded. After a temporary stoppage, Fletcher regained control of the ball and bent Rankin. A period of up-and-down play followed. Monteith raced nway with the ball and shot. Mainland stopped but A. Anthony returned the ball to the circle in a fast run. and equalised the score with a difficult shot just before half-lime. North Shore attacked from the resumption of play, and Mount Eden was driven back. Logan sent his forwards away on a counterattack. which was finally nullified by Rankin. Then for some time North Shore was continually on the offensive. Mount Eden's defence held, however, and a period of even nlay followed. Both forward lines were seen in fast, combined attacks. In the last 10 minutes of the game North Shore took control and three goals were netted in quick succession. After a melee in the Mount Eden circle, Monteith took the rebound from the goalkeeper and netted. Monteith eecured North Shore's fourth goal by following up a pass from Sweeney. Mount Eden lost a great opportunity a few. moments later when, after a combined attack, the inside forwards failed to take advantage of an open goal. The North Shore right flank broke away and Monteith, receiving a pass, goaled again shortly before time, the final ecore being: North Shore, 6; Mount Eden. 2. Messrs. A. E. Playle and G. Peace were referees. LOWER GRADE RESULTS Second Grade.—Training College, 3, University A. 2; Wesley, 5. Grammar Old Boys, 5: Unversity B 3. Mount Eden. 0; Papatoetoe, 4, Somerville. 0.
