UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

COST OF ADMINISTRATION THREE PER CENT OF REVENUE The cost of administering the Unemployment Act is stated by the deputy- : chairman of the Unemployment Board, Mr. J. S. Jessup, to bo less than 3 per cent of the board's revenue. An inquiry into this* question is being sought by the Auckland Trades and Labour Council, which, in a series of resolutions, has asked thafc the Minister of Employment furnish a report on the actual cost involved, giving details as to the expenditure in Auckland, as well as for the rest of New Zealand, and that a definite statement be issued indicating the actual revenue which the board expects to receive during the current year. While not claiming to speak for the Minister, Mr. Jessup has said the cost has been kept down to the very low figure of 3 per cent and that the staff engaged is no larger than is necessary for the very heavy duties it is called upon to perform. "DRIVES" FOR CLOTHING 600 PARCELS FROM REMUERA About 600 or 700 parcels of clothing, valued at between £SOO and £6OO, and some £25 in cash, were collected by members of the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association in the Remuera district on Saturday morning. A house-to-house "drive" was made, members of the association being assisted by Boy Scouts. The parcels contained clothing, boots, foodstuff;-,, books and magazines, and most of tli? yoods collected were in excellent condition. The parcels were sent to the Auckland Metropolitan Relief Committeo for distribution. The president of tho association, Mr. I. Brown, said yesterday the "drive" had been quite successful. The result this year could not be compared with that of last year, when the greater part of Auckland was canvassed, instead of one district. A house-to-houso collection was also made in the Mount Eden district, in aid of distressed families.
