PUZZLE STORY
THE FORTUNE-TELLER " You seem to be very busy—what are you writing ?" said the Bee to the Hazel, watching her as 'she hurriedly scribbled on a lot of odd leaves she had collected from the path. " Didn't you know that I am the Garden Fortune-Teller 1" the Witch-Hazel replied, " and that all the flowers come to me to have their characters read ? They've got great faith in me because they say I always tell them the truth. " That's very clever of you," remarked the Bee. " How do you do it—especially the ones you've never seen before?" , "Well, I'll tell you my secret if you promise not to go buzzing it all over the place," said the Wit-ch. "To be perfectly candid, I don't know anything about it, but I just tell their characters by their names! It seems to work very well." " Hnw's that?" droned the Bee. ''' Well, just watch a moment. Here's a flower about to come in, and, as I know his name, I've got his character all ready written." Thereupon the Witch handed the newcomer a leaf on which was written the words: "A good-tempered lad." The flower, on reading it, looked pleased, and murmuring, How true, indeed!" bowed politely and departed. " You see how well it works," said the [Witeh. " That was Sweet William." 1 Wonderful!" exclaimed the Bee. " Can I see the others you have prepared ?" So the Witch spread all her leaves out on the ground in a row, so that they numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. On each leaf was written the character of a flower. These were the characters: — 1. You love smart clothes. 2. You hope to be remembered. 3. Very fierce and cross. 4. Neat and orderly. 5. You will marry money. 6. You need mending. Now you are left to guess, from the characters written on the leaves, the name of the flower for which each one intended. Solution Next Saturday.
