ORAKEI MAORI VILLAGE
Sir,—The above village has been ,in occupation by the Maoris from time immemorial. The onward iparch of civilisation has come along and upsefc everything for the Maori. The pakeha, with his modern improvements, poisons their shellfish, which constituted a fairly large part of their food. Now there are some decent homes there, and also a number that arc a veritable eyesore. May I try and suggest a remedy. Old Aucklanders have a keen regard for the Maori (which is undoubtedly the finest native race in the world) and have many pleasant memories of Orakci. Is it not possible for the Government to make a grant, and with the assistance of the City Council, Akarana Maori Association, and the Beautifying Society, to get together, rearrange the better-class of houses there, pull down the hovels, and make a small, compact, model village that would be wholesome arid sanitary. This would be n good work, a credit to the city, and could be made an urgent job. Ivoliimarama. Percy White.
