Mrs. C. E. Barry, of Matamata, is visiting Wellington for the Women's Institute concert. Mr?. Leggatt and Miss Beagley, of Hamilton, are visiting Auckland, and are staying at tho Central Hotel. J Miss Jnnico Blunden, of North Canterbury, will leave shortly to spend six months in tho north of Auckland. Miss Nan Dudley, who has been in Auckland for the past year, has returned to licr home in Lower Hutt. Miss Mnrjorin Fair, of Grafton Road, will leave by the Maunganui for Sydney to-day en route, to England where her marriage will take place. Mrs. L. Glance and Miss Sybil Glance, of Mason's Avenue, Ilerne Bay, will leave hv the Maunganui to-day for Sydney, where they will in future reside. Miss Susan Tolhurst, • the Australian lady golf champion, who spent a brief holiday in New Zealand on her way back to Australia from England, will leave by tho Maunganui for Sydney to-day. As a result of a ball held recently in Wellington tho Plunket Society benefits to the extent of approximately £450. This was £IOO less than resulted from a ball held in Wellington last year for tho same cause. A very successful carnival dance in aid of the Okaihau Athletic Club was held in the Commerce Ilall Okaihau, the music being supplied by Mrs. A. J. Edwards' orchestra. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. H. McLeod and Mr. J. McNeill, and the balloon waltz was won by Mrs. Milne and partner. Miss Squire, the dental nurse at the Ruawai clinic, has been appointed to the charge of the Birkenhead dental clinic. Tho latter institution has been closed since April 26, but will be reopened on August 9. The children at the Birkenhead School will be the first to receive treatment, and attention will then be given to the pupils at the schools at Northcote, Birkdale, Glenfield, Albany arid Greenhitbe. There was a very good attendance at the dance hold in the Town Hall at Onerahi in aid of the unemployed. The Onorahi orchestra supplied tho music. There were several competition dances, the hat danco being won by Mrs. A. S. Faagen and her partner, Mr. J. Mason. Tho spot waltz was secured by Mrs. and Mr. Brett; while Mrs. J. Mason won the guessing competition. Cards were played on the stage by tho non-dancers, the first prize being secured by Mr. B. Rule, second by Mr. J. Mason, and third by Mr. G. Brott. The proceeds of the dance will go toward tho unemployed to assist them over the " stand down week." One of the most successful concerts held at tho North Shore for some time took place at tho parish hail at Devonport on Wednesday evening, under tho auspices of tho Devonport Welfare Association, with Madame Humphrey-Steward as organiser. Tho proceeds of the function are in aid of the unemployed fund. The programme included orchestral numbers, vocal and instrumental items and xylophone and saxophone solos. Those taking part were:—Mrs. Bell-Booth, Miss Dorothy Richardson, Miss Beatrice Lowe, Miss Doreen Atkins, Miss Greta Munroo, Miss Margery Taylor, Miss Norma Stevens, Miss Sybil Stevens, Miss Alys Moncur, Miss Gladys Barton, Miss Joy Watt, Mr. Roy Brinsden, Mr. F. Jaconib, Mr, Fraser-Munroe, Master Jack Stuart, Master B. Taylor.

Mr. Barry Couey gave a lecture to the members of the music section of tho League of New Zealand Penwomen on Tuesday evening. The lecturer dealt with tho main principles of vocal technique, emphasising the point that the singer is merely tho interpreter of other men's creations, and must possess intuition and sympathetic understanding. The pithy sentence: "Without adequate technique a singer's art is a structure built upon sand, likely to collapse at any moment," stressed tlie importance of technique. Mr. Coney dealt extensively with vocal art, which ho illustrated by the following wide range of song 6 portraying the music of past ages up to music of tho present day:—"The Gentle Maiden," " When I Am Laid in Earth " (Purcell), " Ombra Mai Fu " (Handel), " Tho Erl King " (Schubert), " Four by the Clock " (Mallinson), " Silent Noon," "Grendon Fair"- and "Molly Branigan." Mrs. Neil acted as accompanist. The annual meeting of the Mount Eden Croquet Club, Inc., was held in tho club's pavilion. Tho report and balancesheet were received and showed a very satisfactory season. A vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring president, Mrs. C. McGill, for her untiring efforts on behalf of the club during the past two years. Mrs. McGill presented to the retiring secretary and the treasurer, Mesdames McKay and Percy, tokens of appreciation of services rendered in their respective offices. The election of officers I resulted as follows:—Hon. patron, Mr. O. Nicholson; president, Mrs. W. G. Allen; vice-president, Mrs. M. Rndd; secretary, Mrs. T. E. Mullins; treasurer, Mrs. E. M. Pago; committee, Mesdames McKay, Solon, Weir, Sherriff, and Salmon; match committee, Mesdames McGill, Solon and Turner; green superintendent, Mrs. McGill; delegates to association, Mesdames Allen, McGill and Mullins; bon. auditor, Mr. S. Gray.
