THE PUBLIC SERVICE.

RESTORATION OF CUT.

■ IMPOSSIBLE THIS YEAR. [by telegraph.—press association.] "WELLINGTON, Tuesday. There is no prospect of the first cut of 10 per cent, in the salaries of public servants being restored at the end of the year. This was made clear by the Primo Minister, the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in an interview to-day. " No cuts will be removed," said Mr. Forbes. " The position is more difficult to-day than when the first cut was made. A good deal of misconception regarding the position exists among Government officers, many of whom believe that the legislation imposing the first cut of 10 per cent, expires on December 31 next.

" Those who hold this view," Mr. Forbes added, " have made a mistake in their interpretation of the Act. There is no time limit fixed to the section of the Act doaling with the salaries of civil servants."
