BELIEF WORK OPERATIONS. MANGERE WATER SUPPLY. The Mannkan County Council met yesterday morning, the chairman, Mr. F. M. [Waters, presiding.
The engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, Reported that operations under scheme No. 5 had been continued. The Papakura district continued under the old scheme with the •" stand-down week," but allocations had been / increased. Elsewhere sufficient money had been available to give workers full time. The work done had been chiefly of a public nature upon roads, as well as some clearing of private farms. The average number of men totalled 277, distributed as follows: —Papatoetoe. 91; Papakura, 71; Mangere, 53; Wairoa, 27; Wiri Drainage Board, 18; Turanga, 15; and county office, 2. Tho programme of works laid down tinder-' the new water supply scheme in Mangere was proceeding. ■Of the 30 miles of pipes in the contract, about 18 miles had been laid to date, and of this 15 miles had been tested and completed Early steps were being taken to instal a chlorinating plant and to establish service connections with the new supply. The'financial position of ridings on July 19 showed the following credit balances: Mangere £3447, Papatoetoe £2573, Papakura £1854. Wairoa £1732, Pakuranga '£1293 and Turanga £IBB. The Auckland Hospital Board advised that the council's levy for the year ending Mfm-h 31 1933. had been .fixed at £5436 17s lOd, an increase of £361 over the preceding year. Building permits issued for the period commencing Juno 15 and ending July 13 totalled £2414. 4 Yho council decided to donate £5 5s to Ihe St. Mary's Homes. The sum donated last ypar was £2 2s.
