EXPENDITURE ON RESERVE.
WORK AT PAPATOETOE.
TOWN BOARD DISCUSSION. " We are spending too much money, on these schemes and shall havo to call a halt," said Mr. J. Bryant, at a meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board last evening, when the Reserves Committee submitted a recommendation that drainage should bo laid in the recreation reserve at an initial cost of £2O. The chairman of the committee, Mr. J. Franklin, said tho levelling of the reserve had been undertaken to provide unemployment relief work, and it was now necessary to lay field tiles to deal with storm water.
Mr. Bryant said the rates in respect of reserves were already too high.
" These are the only schemes we can devise for our unemployed," said Mr. Franklin. Mr. E. 11. Burton said the board had gono to unexpected expense in laying down the new cycle track as a relief work. lie thought it. desirable to call a halt in the expenditure, as essential works on roads would be held up for lack of funds. After further discussion, the chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, suggested that the board should inspect the reserve and decide on the extent of really necessary expenditure. This course was adopted.
