EDUCATION BOARD POLL. SURVIVAL OF OLD CUSTOM. A survival of tho days when rviwl mails were few and far between is to be found in tho rules governing tho election of members of education boards. An election for thrco members of the Auckland Education Board to represent tho Auckland urban area will bo hold today, there being nino nominations. Voting papers were forwarded thrco weeks ago to tho chairman of eacty school commitlco in the urban area for the use of members of the committees in voting. Tho Education Act requires that "a poll shall closo at 5 of tho clock in tho afternoon of tho day of tlio election and that all voting papers shall bo included and counted which aro recolved in ordinary course of post before tho closo of tho fourteenth day after tho day of tho election and aro enclosed in envelopes bearing a post mark of a dato not being later than tho day of the election." At tho latest, the voting papers will bo received at the board's offices tomorrow. However, under tho conditions of tho Act they will bo kept undor Beal nnd opened aft or Wednesday, August 3. This requirement dates from tho earliest memory of present board officials and' is always rigidly adhered to, although tho necessity for tho wait is long since past. Thoso offering themselves for election aro:—Mr. G. Brownlee, Mrs. M. M. Dreaver, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, Mrs. S. A. Kemp, Mrs. F. I. Mcßride, Mr. C. R. Munro, Miss E. M. Newton, Mr. S. Vella, and Mr. T. U. Wells. The retiring members aro Messrs. Brownlee and Wells and Mr. H. S. W. King. Tho following retiring members for other districts have boon returned uhopposcd: —Hamilton urban area, Mr. F. A. Snell; north ward of the rural area, Mr. R. Hoe; cast ward, Mr. A. Burns, who was previously chairman; west ward, Mr. J. Primrose.
