SWAMP WORK IN WINTER.
SINGLE MEN PROTEST. RUAWARO CAMP MEETING. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HUNTLY. Tuesday. The single relief workers, about 60 in number, employed on the Public iWorks Department's swamp drainage scheme at Ruawaro, seven miles west of Huntly, held a meeting to-day to protest against their rate of pay and conditions of work. The men, the majority of whom came from Auckland some months ago, expressed satisfaction with tho food and accommodation provided at the camp, but said that they had repeatedly protested against tho small pay, which averaged 7s 6d weekly per man, and against tho hardships of working in a swamp in winter. They considered that, the conditions in bad weather were disheartening and unduly severe. Somo time ago tho men asked to be placed on road work during tho winter and said they were willing to return to tho swamp in tho summer. i\lr. W. Hall-Jones, assistant-district engineer of tho Public Works Department at Hamilton, visited the camp to-day.
