TROUT IN THE KAWARAU.

RESULT OF CLOSING DAM. As a roimlt of the closing of the gates of the Kawarau dam and tho consequent lowering of tho level of the river, tho trout in the river suffered considerably. A representative of the Lakes District Acclimatisation Society found that fish of all sizes, measuring from 3in. to eightpounders, were lying about on tho exposed gravel and rocky formation below tho dam. Others were suffering captivity in several pools. A. number of helpers sot to work a'nd returned as many as they could into the river, over 400, it is stated. Upward of another 100 had perished. An interesting fact is that about 100 eels were also captured and killed.
