DRAINAGE OF SWAMP.
WORK CEASED AT HIKURANGI. ANXIETY AMONG SETTLERS. [FROM OCR OWN- CORRESPONDENT.] WHANG ARE J, Sunday. Considerable,, anxiety among settlers has been caused through the drainirig operations of the Hikurangi swamp having ceased. The number of men employed on the work has been gradually reduced, and for some time nine men have been operating three dredges. These dredges have been utilised in clearing rocks and debris with a view to lowering tihe river and increasing the rate of flow, this being an important phase of the drainage work. The nine men employed on the work have now been dismissed, and the whole- work of drainage has ceased.' The interest and sinking fund on all the machinery now lying idle is chargeable to the Hikurangi swamp drainage account. The. settlers are of the opinion that the wages of the men dismissed would amount to only, a fraction of the loss involved in laying up the plant. The total amount spent on the .work is £279,223. For the year ending March 31, 1951, wages paid and engineering expenses totalled £17,971.
