CONTROL OF RELIEF WORKS.
MEN OR CORPORATION. MAYOR DECIDES PRINCIPLE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. A deputation from ihe United Front of Unemployed Relief Workers waited upon the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, this morning asking for the reinstatement of two men who had been dismissed from the Wilton block work. The proceedings occupied nearly three hours and were not open to the press. After the 'deputation had withdrawn Mr. Hislop made the following statement: " After hearing all the views and going thoroughly into the matter, I announced that I was of the opinion that the dismissals were properly made, and refused to take any action to withdraw them. The real principle at issue was whether the corporation or the men should control jobs, and the prindple that the corporation must control its own works must be upheld." It was decided after the deputation that .the delegates should return to the various jobs on Monday and place the following resolution before the men:— "That from to-day we work under protest against the inadequacy of the ration scheme and against the of the bureau in handling it." A resolution was passed ." protesting against the recent sentences passed upon. members of the working class " and demanding the repeal of the War Regulations Act'
