ELLERSLIE TRAINING.

CANDIDATES FOR TRENTHAM

TOWN BEAUTY JUMPS WELL

FULL MEASURE GOES FREELY. BY ARCHER. The. weather was fine for training operations at Ellerslie on Saturday and some interesting work wns performed by candidates for the Wellington Winter Meeting and others. One of the features of the work was a good display of fencing by Town Beauty and Master Lu, while Full Measure, Billy Boy, Claremore and Sunny Sky all worked soundly on the No. 3 grass, which was available for galloping. On the No. 3 grass LoTd Aintree and Hispania sprintod three furlongs in 38 l-ss. These horses are both making steady progress and are showing improved condition. Ornamental and the Pantheon-Todine filly covered four furlongs in 508. Ornamental is furnishing nicely and the Pantheon filly has done well since she resumed ' work, although it will be some time yet before she is ready to race. Full Measure (Holland) was slightly 'in advance of Good Idea (Mcßae) at the end ef a round in 1.44 4-5, the last six furlongs being run in 1.21 4-5. It was a solid effort on the part of Hull Measure, who is in great heart to undertake his Trentham trip. Wee Musk (Kowhai) and Horowhenua (light boy) were not bustled to run three furlongs in 4-1 -4-ss. Wee Musk is a lean customer, but he has muscled up a good deal lately and should bo ready to race early in the new season. Progress (ft Gorinax. Desert Star (E. Monson) strode over six furlongs in 1.32 1-5. He has made good progress sinco completing his spell and should not take long to reach racing condition again. Hawthorn (Buchanan) and Marching Song (Ryan) were going comfortably to run five furlongs in 1.10 2-5 Hawthorn has never looked better than at present and Marching Song is also doing well. Kiltowyn (Smith) was going very easily to run five furlongs with Charsong (Parsons) in 1.12 1-5. Kiltowyn will be well forward for the early spring meetings. The Pantheon—Dora's Double filly was never at top while running four furlongs in 59 l-ss. She :a a fine big filly and displayed some speed for a couple of furlongs when previously in training. Corinax (Wiggins) and Moonfleet (Clifford) dashed over four furlongs in 52 4-ss. Corinax is making excellent progress and Moonfleet also appears to be thriving, although he is delicate and i 3 not easy to keep fit. Sunny Sky (Wiggins) was given her first sprint since the Great Northern meeting and she pleased by running half-a-milo in 52 l-ss. Sunny Sky has been branded in readiness for her trip to Sydnej l . Claremore Works Solidly. Claremore (L. Dulieu) covered a round and three furlongs in 2.40, running the last round in 1.52 1-5 arid the last six furlongs in 1.25. He finished up his work well and looks more fit now than, he did at tho Great Northern meeting. Billy Boy went with a good deal of dash to beat Egyptian King over half-a-mile in 54 3-ss. Billy Boy has been doing well and will not lack condition for his Trentham engagements. Neil (Mcßae) and Kamehameha (Lark) set out together to iiunp six hurdles, but Kamehameha unseated his rider at the second fence. Neil went on alone and gave a fine display. Town Beauty (H. Dulieu) and Master Lu (F. Thompson) gave a fine display of-fenc-ing over the steeplechase fences on the flat, Town Beauty giving a particularly good j exhibition. They were accompanied by Kamehamehs. (Lark), who fenced safely. Town Beauty afterwards defeated Master Lu over six furlongs on the grass in 1.27 3-5 and altogether his work was very pleasing. VETERAN RESUMES WORK. WHARNCLIFFE IN TRAINING. [from our own correspondent.] PALMER STON NORTH. Saturday. Although he is now rising lS years old the Thurnham—Takaliau gelding, Wharncliffe. has been again put into training, and on this occasion is an inmate of Mrs. A. W. McDonald's stable at Awap'uni. Originally owned by Mr. J. J. Lewis, in the South Island. Wharncliffe commenced his racing career as a five-year-old in the 1924-25 season, and was unplaced in his only two starts. In the following season he started 13 times for two firsts, three seconds and five thirds, his first success being gained in the Studholmo Hurdles at Waimate. In 1926-27 ho won four races, was second twice and third three tir&es, his performances including victories in the Snreydon Hurdles at the Grand National meeting, and the Trentham Hurdles at Wellington. and second to Nukumai in the Winter Hurdle 3. In 1927-28 he won tho Grand National Hurdles, which proved to bo his only success that season. Wharncliffe was then purchased by the late Mr., J. S. Barrett, of Christchurch. but in six starts in 1928-29 he failed to earn any money and in 19*29-30 ho eecured only two thirds at Napier Park. Last season he had only three outings, all unsuccessful and. judging by appearance, it will be well on in tho new season before he is fullv attuned for racing again, ,Nevertheless, it will be interesting 1o see whether he can show a return to form in tho same way as Nukumai, his victor in the Winter Hurdles in 1927. who. in spite of his years, heads the weights for this year's Winter Hurdles.
