CHARITY ART UNION.
CITY MISfiION PROPOSAL. CHURCH GAZETTE COMMENT. CASE OF " DUAL PERSONALITY." Comment on the action of tho Rev. Jasper Calder, Anglican city missioner, in promoting an art union to raise funds for his mission work is made in the current issue of the Church Gazette. An article under tho heading, "Bad Economics, Bad Morals, Bad Religion," states:— "We are sure that our readers and churchfolk throughout tho province will be glad to know that His Grace the Archbishop has formally protested against the proposed art union associated in the minds of many with the City Mission. At its last meeting the Auckland Clergy Association passed tho following resolution, with one dissentient voice: That the members of the Auckland Clergy Association express their disapproval of the attempt of the city missioner to raise funds for charitable purposes by means of a so-called art union.
"It is'duo to members of our Church and our Christian brethren of other Churches, that these expressions of disapproval should be publicly staled.
"In the last issue of the Drilter tho city missioner states that the art union is being conducted in aid of a fund called
'The Jasper Calder (Jharjty "Fund or Trust Board, Incorporated,' and that* this fund is controlled by himself and a co-trustee, and that he is answerable to no organised body whatsoever for its method of raising funds or its expenditure. This suggests an interesting case of 'dual personality,' for the 'city missioner' as such is at least nominally responsible to tho authorities of the diocese, but tho 'Jasper Calder' of this particular fund is 'answerable to no organised religious body whatsoever.' "The article in the Drifter also contains this statement: 'I am not going to refuse a second-rate way of raising money when ray diocese docs not come forward with a first-rate one.' Why should it.' Why should it support this fund, tho administrator of which is 'answerable to no organised religious body whatsoever,' while the fund itself 'must on no account be associated with ordinary religious or church activities?'
"We all know that tho City Mission has done some fine work, for which reason we regret all the more this latest move."
