COLLIERY FIRES.
MENACE OF THE FLAMES. £20,000 DAMAGE CAUSED. (Received April 26, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 26. The fires in the workings of an abandoned colliery beneath the township of Greta, near Newcastle, have extended considerably and are now a definite menace to the safety of the main northern railway line. The flarnes, which rose to a height of 60ft., caught the pit head of the central Greta colliery and destroyed practically all the overhead structure. A later message states that the fi'es are still blazing fiercely. The whole countryside is darkened by a pall of black smoke with objectionable fumes. The pithead buildings and the machinery are destroyed.
The damage is estimated at £20,000.
