RIOTING AND IGNORANCE.

Sir,—ln his letter on the above topic in your Friday's issue W. F. Green su<rgested that tho riotous youth is the rpsuit of. that period of education upon which money was freely lavished and adds, One dreads to think what would have happened if another million or so' xs eie spent annually on education " He misses the point. Such results are "in spite of," not "because of" the system of education. Personally, I dread to think what would have happened had the money not been spent. Then he must needs bring in the poor old teacher. Why r.ot ask the parents to take soma of the responsibility? If the education system is to be held solely responsible, then tho State, should have complete control and the teacher should be asked whether it is a proper thing for Mr. X. and Miss Y. to be joined in tho bonds of holy matrimony. I should think that of all tho duties the teacher is called upon to perform, ho would appy himself to that one with the greatest diligence. Furthermore, all aspirants to either education board or school committee fame should hold a certificate of merit in education; then they would realise that the abolition of corporal punishment, for girls up to the period of early adolescence is a grave mistake, which is responsible to «i great extent for the recent happenings. As for (he boys—well, wo all, know that Eve took the first bite. In conclusion. I would advise AY. F. Green to examine his own education, with a view to doing his share in the prevention of future riots. Mens sana xk cobpoee sako<
