Although thero was generally a better demand for fruit at tho (Jity Markets yesterday, values showed little improvement on late, quotations. Apples and pears were again offered in large quantities and sold at low rates. Granny Smiths touched lop figure, realising up to 6s 6d a case. Thero was a fair demand for grapes, passion fruit and tomatoes, but lemons were slow of sale." Ripe bananas were in heavy supply and values remained low. A shipment of Tongan bananas was not offered yesterday. Tree tomatoes were on sale at 3s to 5s 6d a case. In the field produce market there were good supplies of all vegetables in season. The directors of the National Insurance Company, Limited, have declared an interim dividend of 4d a share for tho half-year ended March 31. The dividend is payable on May 16. Since November, 1927, when the capital of tho company was subdivided from £5 shares paid to £1 10s into £1 shares paid first to 6s, and in tho following year* io 7s, the company has paid an interim dividend of 4d a share and a filial dividend of sd, making 9d a share for the year. Fairfax, of Sydney, has been appointed a director of the Rank of New South Wales. Mr. Fairfax is a soil of the late Sir .Tames Fairfax, who was chairman of the Sydney Morning Herald, and is a member of one of Sydney's old families. Sir James was also a director of the bank for several terms. Mr. Fairfax for many years, until recently, followed grazing pursuits.on the Darling Downs, but ho will now reside in Sydney.
