CRUISE OF DISCOVERY 11. VISIT TO AUCKLAND IN JUNE. INVESTIGATING MARINE LIFE. A visit to Auckland for the purposo of refitting will be made about June 25 by the Royal research ship Discovery 11., which will later resume its voyage of investigation in the Southern Ocean on behalf of the Falkland Islands Government. The scientific officer in charge of the vessel is Mr. D. Dilwyn John M.Sc., and the commander is a retired officer of the Royal Navy, Commander W. M. Carey. A communication from the Colonial Office regarding the visit of the Discovery 11. was received by the Auckland Harbour Board at a meeting yesterday afternoon. The board was asked if it would mako the facilities of the port available to the vessel. It was stated in the communication that it was not known whether the sjiip would require to be docked at Auckland or whether repairs would be necessary. A reply to the Colonial Office letter lias already been sent on behalf of the board by the superintendent, Mr. H. B. Burnett, it being stated that the board was willing to make the port facilities available to the vessel. A similar reply is to bo sent to the Marine Department, which also communicated with the board regarding the visit of the Discovery 11. Tho vessel is not to be confused with the ship Discovery used by Captain Robert Falcon Scott for his Antarctic expedition in 1910, and by Sir Douglas Mawson during the British, Australian and New Zealand scientific expedition in tho Southern Ocean in 1929. The vessel coming to Auckland was commissioned seven years ago by the Colonial Office, with finance provided by the Falkland Islands Government, for research into the habits of whales with the object of assisting the whaling industry. The Discovery 11. has on board a party of British scientists who are studying marine life in the Southern Ocean. The duration of the cruise is two years.
