SPEED RECORD ATTEMPTS.
CAR RETURNS TO BEACH.
SURFACE FAIRLY SMOOTH.
The 16-milo course at the Ninety-Mile Beach, on which he hopes to break the world's land-speed record, was inspected by Mr. Norman Smith yesterday and also on Sunday. With tho exception of a small wash-out near tho 13-mile peg, the beach was found to be in fairly good condition. There were several wet patches, but tho driver does not expect to bo troubled by flying sand and water since the new revolving screen should ensure good vision. Tho beach was smooih, and not as wet as might have been expected so lato in the season. Tlie racing car, tho Fred. H. Stewart Enterprise, which was shipped from Auckland on Saturday, was unloaded at Awanui North yesterday morning, and was immediately taken to the garage at Hukatere on the special truck and trailer. The equipment which was stored at Kaitaia will probably be taken back to the garage during tho next few days. It is likely that Mr. Smith will advise Mr. H. J. Butcher and the other officials this morning as to when he requires thern at the beach. They expect to leave Auckland to-morrow or on Thursday. Mr. Ludwig Nudl, the ignition expert, will fly to the beach to morrow morning, taking with him special instruments for testing tho compression of the motor. Ho will do any hecessary tuning before the end of the week, when it is hoped to make tho first run.
