MISS NELLIE SCANLAN.
NEW ZEALAND WRITER. THIRD NOVEL PUBLISHED. LONDON, April 21. 'Messrs. Jarrolds havo published Miss Nellie M. Rcanlan's third novel, " Pencarrow." Tho story concerns tho fortunes of three generations of a New Zealand family from the early pioneering days to the present century.
Miss Nellie Scanlan originally was a journalist at Palmerston North. She went through all tho stages of that profession from a cadetship to senior reporting before she viewed the world. In 1921 she was the only New Zealand woman journalist at the Limitation of Arms Conference at Washington. In America she promoted the " Boudoir Mirror " sketches, which became very popular, and her articles on New Zealand subjects were eagerly sought after. Miss Scanlan travelled with the Duke and Duchess of York through New Zealand in 1927, when her delightful descriptive accounts of the tour attracted attention. In 1929 sho won the first prize of £2OO offered by the Daily Express for the best criticism of any film, choosing " The Garden of Allah " as her subject.
