SHOP WINDOW BROKEN.

PONSONBY ROAD INCIDENT.

DOUBTS HELD AS TO CAUSE.

An isolated incident of window-breaking occurred in Ponsonby Road shortly before nine o'clock last evening. The plateglass window of a fruiterer's shop at 145, Ponsonby Road, occupied by Mr. H. F. Boulter, was smashed by a broken trolley wheel. However, it cannot be definitely stated whether the missile was thrown through the window or whether it was projected by accident. The missile was roughly half a wheel of tho type commonly used by boys on trolleys. It was still covered with grease. When the window was broken a boy standing in the street noticed a motorcar swerve in toward the pavement. The trolley wheel might easily have been thrown from the car, but on the other hand the piece of metal might have been lying on the roadway and been projected accidentally through the window by the tyre of the car passing over it. The wheel struck the window at a point only 2ft. or 3ft. above the ground. The incident was quickly reported to the police, and in addition to constables from tho Ponsonby police station, a detachment of detectives and constables from the city station was immediately rushed to Ponsonby Road. However, as far as they were concerned, it was very largely a false alarm.

The damage to the window of the shop is estimated at about £l7.
