LIQUOR AFTER HOURS.
HOTEL LICENSEE FINED.
SEQUEL TO POLICE VISIT.
The licensee of the Wynyard Arms note!, Alfred Ernest Sainty, was prosecuted before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, on a charge of permitting liquor to be consumed on licensed premises after hours. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said that shortly after 6..50 p.m. on March 19 a constable visited the Wynyard Arms Hotel and accosted seven men, who were leaving the building by the back door. These men were not boarders and admitted to the constable that they had been drinking after closing hours. Five of tho men arrived at the hctel in a taxicab, the driver of which called the police following a quarrel with the men concerning a broken window in the cab. In 1930 Sainty had been fined £T 10s 'for exposing liquor for sale after hours, but since then his hotel had been fairly well managed. "My client has been a hotel licensee for about 30 yjars and has caused a minimum of inconvenience to the police," said counsel in asking for leniency. The magistrate imposed a fine of £7 10s.
A fine of £1 was imposed on each of the seven men found in the hotel.
