RELIEF WORK STRIKE.

SETTLEMENT DELAYED.

ban on picketing sought.

requirement by mayor

There will be no further discussions by the committee of civic leaders on the terms submitted by the Auckland Unemployed Workers' Association for the ending of the strike of relief workers until an assurance is received that there will be no more efforts on the part of pickets to prevent men from working. The terms on which the strike would be called off were submitted on Wednesday by a deputation from the workers' association to the committee. This committee consists of the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. G. R. Hutchinson, the chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, and the chairman of the Auckland ElectricPower Board, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth. These terms related mainly to an amended scale of pay and the committee, although it has reached a decision, refused to forward any recommendations to the Government until it had been given an undertaking that there would be no more picketing or disturbance on the jobs. It was stated by representatives of the workers' association yesterday that they were not in a position to give such an assurance. They had been told by the Mayor that until they were prepared to agree to his proposal he would not discuss the position further with them. Confirmation of this statement was given yesterday by the Mayor, who said the committee had unanimously agreed that it would have no further discussions with the representatives of the workers' association and would not forward its recommendations to thft Government, until the officers of the association showed that they were desirous of effecting a settlement by agreeing to the conditions he had laid down. If this undertaking were given the committee was prepared to devote the whole of its time to arranging a satisfactory settlement.
