COUNTRY STOCK SALES.

THE WAIKATO MARKET, \f. FURTHER ADVANCE IN LAMB: GOOD EFFECT OF WEATHER. . Night temperatures have been lower thia week, but not low etjough to check the growth, of pasture. The past fortnight's genial influence has transformed the face of the district. Practically no alteration has taken in tlie stock market. Lamb for export has advanced another Id. lifting it to 5Jd, which, although not of much consequence to the regular lamb grower is of distinct benefit to the dairyman who early in the autumn took advantage of his opportunity to purchase cheap stores. Many of these are now being marketed with profitable results. Tt is perhaps somewhat early to expert definite knowiedgo regarding the value -of dairy heifers, but holders a.nd traders would welcome 6ome near indication. Many sound reasons exiat for arguing lower standard?, but the certainty, now- fully recognised, that more than eyer will be needed must strongly counteract depressing influences. Very few genuine clearing 6ales have eo far been listed, and it would seem as if existing farm tenures are unlikely thia season to be greatly disturbed. Beef still remains problem. "Boner' cows have now dropped to 3s 6d per 1001b., the lowest rate on record. It equals .42 of a penny per pound. Conditions as they affect the separate branches are:— BEEF. An average entry was penned at the central yards on Tuesday, and for prime quality competition was firmer. Plain ox and cow beef remained equal to the previous _ week. Choice ox sold from IS6 to 193; ordinary, 15s to 16s; plain, l'2s to 13s: prima heifer, lCs to 17s; prime cows, 12s to 13s; plain, Gs to 7s. MUTTON. Competition in .all centres keeps a fairly even level. A good entry was penned at, the central yards, _ and no difficulty in clearing was experienced. Values _ were very firm for all classes ewes being 1 a shade better. Lambs fully reflected the export advance of Jd. Best wethers sold from 14s to 15s 6d; medium. 12b 6d to fid; plain, From lis; best ewes (not maiden), 8s to 9s Gd; plain sheep, from 6s; heavy lambs, 14s to 15s 6d (extra heavy to 176); medium, lis Gd to 13s 6d; light, from ■ 9s Gd. STORE CATTLE. The drop in the value of "boner"' beef makes a bad position worse, as the ;rardinga in this section are chiefly composed of such; in fact, from an auctioneer's viewpoint they are not worth handling. Steers remain as dull as ever and even the best fail to excite interest. Jersey calves are in demand up to a moderate figure, but it i# not possible to_ fix a true value standard until the spring price becomes estab- __ lished. Values are: Forward bullocks, £3 to £3 10s; stores. £2 to £2 10s; 2i-year steers, £1 10s to £1 17s Gd: li-year steers. 15s to £1 ss; fresh young cows, 15s to £1: aged and 6tores, 10s to 12s 6d; heifera 5n calf. £4 15s to £5 ss; (private sales of choice lots have been made to £6 10s. and in one instance higher); smaller, from £2 ss; heifer calves, to 355; medium, 17s bd <o £1 se; small, from ss. SVORE SHEEP. A firm market exists for both wetKer* and lambs. At the central yards this week competition was strong, and an easy clear» ance under the hammer was made. Breeds ing ewes attract little attention, although it must be admitted that few deserving it have lately been submitted. Values axe: Forward wethers, 10a 6d to lis 9d; etoree. 9s 9d to 10s 6d; best lambs (forward), 7e to 8s; stores, 5e 6d to 6s 6d; medium, 4s 9d to 5s 3d. PIGS.
