SIX-ROOMED HOUSE BURNED.
CONTENTS ALSO DESTROYED.

A six-roomed wooden house, cccu* pied by Mr. J. W. Duncan, Agriculture Department caretaker on Motuihi Island was destroyed by fire at an early hour yesterday morning. Jf r . Duncan and his family have been away from the island on holiday for a week and little is known regarding the actual loss.
The house, which stood in a prominent position on a hillside to the left of the wharf, was also used as ths post-office. On Tuesday Miss McLean, the actingpostmistress, was in attendance and she locked up the building at night. Shortly after three o'clock yesterday morning one of the children at the Sunshine Camp was awakened and he gave the alarm. Efforts were made by the staff at the camp and others to subdue the flames, but they had too strong a hold. A hoso was used with little effect and the building was soon a heap of smouldering ruins, with only the chimneys standing. The contents were destroyed. During the war the house was used for the internment of the Governor of German Samoa. HOUSE AT KAIPARA FLATS. FAMILY ABSENT AT TIME. A six-roomed house in Hoteo Road, Kaipara Flats, owned and occupied by Mr. Stanley Hood, was gutted by fire shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday. The family was absent at the time. There was an insurance policy of £650 on the building and £IOO. on the content:! with the New Zealand office. WALLS' OF ROOMS DAMAGED. , EARLY MORNING OUTBREAK. Fire caused minor damage to the walli of two rooms of a five-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr. L. G. Donaldson, at 51, Fine Street, Mount Eden, at an early hour yesterday morning. Tha outbreak was suppressed with first-aid extinguishers by • the Mount Eden brigade. The house was insured for £7OO with the State Fire Office, and the furni ture for £IOO with the Royal Office. Extpnsive damage was caused this evening by a fire which occurred in a stationery and fancy goods shop in Victoria Street. Cambridge, occupied by Mr. Wilfred White. The outbreak was discovered in good time, but. considerable damage to the stock was caused by smoke and water.
