WOMEN AND TAXES.
PROTEST AGAINST LEVY. The monthly meeting of the Remuera branch of the W.G.T.U. was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Hugh Kasper, (he president for the Auckland district, presided. Miss A. McLay, Dominion organiser, spoke on the necessity existing for each and every woman playing her part in the social service of New Zealand. The steps recently taken by women's organisations throughout the country in the direction of protesting against what, is deemed to be unjust legislation were described at length by Mrs. Fred Daldy. " Mr. J. McCombs, M.P., has ascertained that £750,000 is the sum estimated to be raised by the women's unemployment tax," Mrs. Daldy said. "Of this amount the Government apparently intends to ex-pond some £IO,OOO in women's unemployment relief. The New Zealand members "of the W.0.T.U., numbering about 9000, are voicing in no uncertain manner their belief that, the cut in old age pensions, as well ns the proposed imposition of a tax of one shilling in the pound upon Ihe incomes of women, is nothing less than a gross injustice: and we are determinedly urging upon the Prime Minister the necessity for reconsidering legislation now before the House." Mrs. Robinson, vice-president of the Remuera branch, was elected delegate to the National Council of Women. Sister Grace and Mrs. Hugh Kasper were appointed street, collectors for Poppy Day. A most enjoyable programme of music and song wn's provided by Mrs. Percy Winst-one. Mrs. Lewis Endv and Mrs. Fred Daldy.
