CABLE BROUGHT ASHORE
SCENE AT MURIWAI BEACH. AEROPLANE CARRIES LINE. DIFFICULTIES IN THE SURF. [from our own correspondent.] WAIMAUKU, Tuesday. After several unsuccessful attempts the end of the transtasman cable from the cable steamer Recorder was brought ashore at Muriwai Beach to-day. An aeroplane again visited the beach to take out a line to a launch waiting outside the breakers. However, it was not' until the third attempt that this was accomplished, as when the line broke it fell short of the waiting launch. As a team of eight - horses, together with a tractor, failed to move the cable yesterday, a log-hauler was obtained from Mr. Bowling, of Helensville, and with this the cable was brought ashore to-day and hauled up to the cable-house, about a-quarter of a mile up the beach, "lhe work was not completed until about seven o'clock this evening. A large number of people gathered on the beach to watch operations. The launch was lying about a mile out' from the shore, and as the cable weighs from 35 to 40 tons a mile, the difficulty of hauling it through the surf can be understood.
