ENJOYABLE CONCERT. A very enjoyable concert, comprising a programme of high musical excellence, was given by the Auckland Municipal Rand on Saturday evening under llie conductorsliip of Mr. Geo. Uucklcy. A selection, including portions of Haydn's " Creation" and many oilier gems from this composer's great works, was enthusiastically received. Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries," Rossini's "William Jell and Liszt's " llungaria.ii Rhapsody No. 2," were all splendidly played and highly appreciated by the audience. "I'orest Echoes," a descriptive piece containing some beautiful oboe passages which were artistically played bv .Mr. Sheldon, " A Hunting Scene" by' Riicalossi, and the march " Martial Moments." I lie soloists for the. evening were Madame Ailcen .Johns and Air.'"Robert Simmers. Madame Johns, who is the possessor of a. dramatic soprano voice of excellent quality, gave as her first imbiber "I he Soldier's Wile," by Rachmaninoff and, in response to an enthusiastic double encore, sang Alfred Hill's "Waiata J'oi" and tho negro spiritual "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." Iler second number was " f Hid My Love," by de ITardelot, with " Break o' Day" as an encore. Mr. Simmers was also very well received by tho audience. He gnvo excellent renderings ol' " When the King Went to War," by Koerieman, and " 1 Am Fate," by Hamblin, with " Lassie o' Mine" and " Passing Hy" as eneoi'o numbers. In addition to these a xylophone solo " Silver Stars," was given by ]\lr. T\owlaiul Jackson, also a flufe solo, " A Mountain Idyll." by Mr. Hal C. McLennan. I'oth were encored. Miss Katlilecn O'Leary played ihe accompaniments. The band also gave a. programme at lire Zoological Park yesterday afternoon.
