SETTLEMENT OF LAND.
SOLVING UNEMPLOYMENT. BAY OF PLENTY PROPOSALS. [FROM OT7R OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHAKATANE, Saturday. A committee set up by the conference of Bay of Plenty local bodies and residents to investigate tho question of land settlement as a permanent solution of unemployment., met at Whakatane, tho Mayor ojf Whakatane, Mr. W. Sullivan, presiding. The following resolutions were carried:—
"That, while recognising the difficulty of the unemployment problem, this committee is of the opinion that a change of policy is essential for a permanent solution. Tho conimitteo recommends that a determined effort should be made to formulate a vigorous land settlement policy, preferably dealing with Crown lands, to establish suitable unemployed as settlers.
"That any scheme formulated bo administered by a local committee, consisting of experienced men with a knowledge of local conditions, such committee to co-operate with tho department's officials. The committee suggested that a Government official, in co-operation with the local committee, should inspect certain areas of Crown and privately-owned land with a view to settlement.
"That the finance necessary to carry out any land settlement scheme as proposed bo obtained by the raising of an internal loan at a low rate of interest."
