YESTERDAY'S AUCTIONS. FIRM PRICES FOR ORANGES. ' A consignment of Californian orafjges, which arrived by the Sonoma yesterday, brought 44s to 50s a'case at the Auckland City Markets yesterday. The firm prices were duo to the market being practically baro of oranges, as supplies of Sydney and Tahitian fruit, which arrived earlier in the week, had been disposed of almost immediately. A shipinent of Fijian oranges will be brought by the Tofua on Monday. Following the recent heavy rain, outdoor grapes were in shorter supply and sold at 5s- 6d to 10s a case, as against 4s to 5s 6d a case last week. Apples and pears and hothouse grapes met with a' poor demand. Tomatoes brought improved values. A fair inquiry existed for lemons. The field produce section was heavily supplied with cabbage, cauliflower, pump,kins, and swedes, and there were adequate stocks of green peas, celery, beans, sprouts and other vegetables in season., * Most classes met with a fair demand, there being no outstanding changes in prices. Hamilton, reports on its Te Awamutu stock sale on Thursday as follows:—Cattle: An average yarding of fat and store cattle met with a firm demand at values fully on a par with, recent Frankton quotations. Bidding was brisk for good quality weaner heifers, but there was little .demand for more, backward sorts. Quotations are; Prime fat cows, £4 10s to £5 6s; average quality, £3 5s to £3 255; lighter, -£2 10? to £3 2s Sd; - light, £2 os to £2 10s; killable. £1 15s to £2 ss; good 6tore cows, £1 Is to £1 -8s; others, 14s to £1; good yearling heifers, £1 10= to £2 Is; poorer conditioned, 16s' to £1 os. Sheep: Several pens of fat sheep realised late rates, while a large offering of store sheep, principally lambs, met with spirited competition, and all changed hands pt very satisfactory prices. VALUES AT MATAWHERO. [BY TELEGRAM. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE, Friday. There was a good demand for fat sheep, second-grade ewes and store sheep at the Matawhero sale to-day. Some good cows were yarded in the beef section,.' fesit generally they required topping off, Good Hereford heifers made £3 2s 6d and cows i'2 7s 6d to £2 15s, and lighter-conditioned sorts, £1 15s. The fat sheep entry totalled 404. The market wvas good, with, a hardening in values. Ewes niado 6s 4d to 7s 9d: wethers, 10s 9d to lis _ 4d; lambs, 9s to jlOs 6d, one extra good line realism? 12s 6d. Second-grade ewes were in great demand at 6s 3d to Gs 9d. There was a moderate eniry of- store sheep, which met with a very keen sale. Ewes made 9s for four and fiveyear; 7s lOd for good-frame forward ewes; five-year, 7s 5d to 7s lOd; six-tooth, in fairly good condition, 8s 9d: and good twotooth. 7s Id. Good wethers made 10s to 10s Id. Lambs sold for 9s 7d for lusty fat and forward and a pen of first-class wethers realised Bs.
