ARREST ON RACECOURSE.
BOOKMAKING ADMITTED. FINE OF £lO IMPOSED. A carter, Oenrsie. Sidney Furrow, aged 32, who was arrested by Detective Nalder on the Ellerslie Racecourse on Monday, was fined by Mr. E. C. Cuttcn, S.M., in the Folice Court yesterday for carrying on tho business of a bookmaker. Detective Nalder said ho had known Farrow as a bookmaker for three or four years, and there had recently been complaints that the accused had not paid on successful bets. Witness received several complaints at Ellerslie. and arrested Farrow, who denied that ho was betting, but said ho had paid some of his clients. There was no betting material in his possession. Farrow had been put off the Alexandra Park trotting course about six months before and had been warned. Counsel for accused said betting was admitted. Farrow had suffered from illhealth and lie was not able to do manual work. He had made only a few small befs, and he was prepared to give up bookmaking. Tho magistrate imposed a fine of £lO. in default, one month's imprisonment, the accused being allowed a week in which to find payment.
