ASCENTS OF RUAPEHU.
Sir,—l, among many others, have followed very closely tho articles m your columns by Kapanga and others dealing with early ascetUs of Ruapehu, which are of undoubted historic interest. I consider that a debt is duo to the distinguished New Zealand geologist, Profossor Park, of Otago University, for his clear and, informative letter of March 24. I had always understood from those most conversant with the subject that the first ascent of the South or Summit peak of Ruapehu was made by Professor Park in January, 18R6. This appears to be clearly established. Walter Dunnage, late staff surveyor of the Lands and Survey Department, who later, in 1895, made a descent to the crater lake, accompanied Professor Park on his climb in 1836, when they took both Girdleston Peak and the South Peak in their stride. A print of a photograph taken by Dunnage in 1895 of bis party at the crater lako is still in the possession of a wellknown Tauranga resident. Mount Aurvm.
