WELLINGTON £28,270 BEHIND. ELEVEN-MONTHS DEBIT. " Gross expenditure exceeded the estimate by £20,150, to which must be added £BI2O on account of the deficiency in receipts from patients' fees, etc.j making a total debit balance of £28,270 for tho eleven months," stated Mr. F. Castle, chairman of the Wellington Hospital Hoard, when furnishing a return for the period ended February 29, to the board. " Hospital maintenance expenditure) has fallen below the estimate of £10,429," Mr. Castle said. This saving, as compared with the estimates, was made lip as fol lows Provision, £1455; surgery and dispensary, £405; domestic and establishment, £1123; sundry, £2368; salaries and wages, £1499; miscellaneous, £3579. In addition, a decrease in expenditure below tho estimate was shown by tho Oliiro Home, £s7b, and tho head office, £671. POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH. BOARD'S HEAVY BURDEN. An expenditure of £24.000 greater than tho estiinato and a revenue £4OOO less than tho estimate will bo shown in the annual balance-sheet of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, according to a statement based on tho figures for the 10 months ended January 31, which has just boon issued. The heavy demand on the board's funds for tho relief of distress caused by unemployment is the primary cause of the excess of expenditure.
