SWIMMING RECORD.
MISS STOCKLEY'S FEAT. FAST 110 YARDS AT MANLY. (Received March 20, 11.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 20. At a swimming carnival held at Manly yesterday in connection with the harbour bridge celebrations the 110 yards invitation scratch race for women was won by Miss E. Stockley in 72 2-ss. This is a record for Australia.
Miss Ena Stockley, formerly a member of the Auckland Girls' Grammar School Swimming Club, is throughout the Dominion as the finest woman sprint swimmer New Zealand has ever produced. She has a wonderful record, having been the 100 yards women's freestyle champion of New Zealand for five successive years, from 1925 to 1929. She was the 100 yards women's backstroke champion in 1928 and 1929. In 1926 and 1928 she was the winner of the 100 yards Australian free-style and backstroke championships. She represented the Dominion at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928. reaching the final of the 100 metres free-style championship, but was unplaced.
On Miss Stockley's return she attained remarkable form and established the- following New Zealand records:—so yards free-style, 28 2-55.; 100 yards free-style, 655.; 100 metres free-style, 71 4-55.; 100 yards backstroke. 76 2-55.; 100 metres backstroke, 84 2-ss. Her time for the 100 metres free-style was a record for the British Empire.
Tn 1930 Miss Stockley left Auckland to reside in Sydney. She rested for a year and competed again last season, her most notable performance being a swim of 64 4-ss. for 100 yards. Three weeks ago she broke the New South Wales 100 yards record of 64 3-55.. by 5-ss. In degree of merit Miss Stockley's time. 72 2-55., is an even better performance than her best. 100 metres time. 71 4-ss.
