KILLED BY MOTOR-VAN.
VEHICLE ON FOOTPATH. MAN CRUSHED AGAINST FENCE. STRUCK WHEN OPENING SHOP. ~[BY TELEGKArH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE, Friday. A serious motor accident occurred in Gisborrie shortly after 7 o'clock this morning when Mr.. William Hazell, a well known fruiterer, was crushed by a motor van and received injuries which shortly afterwards proved fatal. Mr. Hazell was in the act of opening his shop in Wainui Road for business when the motor vehicle approached from the direction of Wainui Beach. A short distance from where Mr. Hazell stood'the van got out of control. It swerved, mounted the footpath and collided with him. The impetus of the vehicle was such that verandah, posts were snapped off at the ground level, one being thrown to the roof of the verandah and another carried a chain along the road. M r . Hazell was carried for half a chain on the bonnet of the van and then crushed between the van and a picket fence. Mr. Hazell's injuries were so severe that he did not long survive. The motor van was badly damaged, but the driver, Mr. Jack Elliott, escaped with a few cuts. Mr. Hazell served in the Imperial Army in his younger days and saw service in India and Afghanistan. He leaves a widow and a young family of four.
