GRANDMAMA'S DAYS.
NO BUSTLES FOR SUMMER. THE HIGH WAISTLINE. Grandmother styles have gon e to the wall and fashion has decided to let bustles be bygones so far as our next spring and summer clothes are concerned. But now our brief return to Victorianism is at an end, the designers seem, at Home and abroad, in some cases to have sought a little inspiration fi'om even earlier periods, those of Louis XV. and the Directoire era.
The first of the Paris dress shows, indicates that fashion intends to be kind to women of most types, but if we want to be smart we cannot please ourselves about the position of the waistline, for this is no longer in its normal place —it must be decidedly higher. Very high belts of suede, satin and cire linen appear on gowns for all occasions, emphasising the high waist-line, and many skirts are cut with a corselet effect and are allied to blouses of a contrasting shade.
