LONDON'S LARGEST CLOCK.

Work on the construction of what will be the largest clock in London was recently begun. It was hoped that the clock would be in position surmounting the new Shell-Mex Building on the site of the Hotel Cecil this month.

The two white Portland stone dial faces of the clock, which will be visible on clear days from the Crystal Palace and Hampstead, will be wider than those of its neighbour, Big Ben. Yet, unlike Big Ben, the new clock will be silent. It will be electrically controlled, and will be operated by a weight, which will be automatically wound every hour by an electric motor. It is stated that the clock face will be able to withstand a wind pressure up to 100 miles an hour. The largest clock face in Great Britain is that of the Singer clock at Clydebank, which is 26ft- in diameter.
