ENLARGING SCHOOLS.

GIVING CARPENTERS WORK.

LABOUR MEMBER'S PROPOSAL.

[by telegraph.—special reporter.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday.

A suggestion that the Minister of Education should make immediate provision for education boards to subsidise the wages of unemployed carpenters in the Auckland district to enable accommodation to be provided in cases of overcrowded schools, was made by Mr. A. S. Richards (Labour—Rcskill) in an urgent question in the Houso of Representatives to-day. Mr. Richards said the proposal would enable competent tradesmen to be employed in enlarging schools at a great saving to both the education boards and the Education Department. Replying on behalf of the Minister of Education, the Prime Minister, the Rt» Hon. G. W. Forbes, said consideration had to be given to the question of -what funds would be available for the purpose next year. Until that could be ascertained, he was unable to answer the question.
