WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Albany.—The monthly meeting of the Albany Institute was held recently. Arrangements for the rustic fair, to be held at Greenhithe, were completed. Amusing readings were given by some of the members. An interesting competition was held, Mrs. Smith being the winner. The roll call was " Foods Mentioned in Shakespeare."
Bombay.—The president, Mrs. J. B. McKinpey, presided at the monthly meeting. Visitors were present from Auckland and Rangiriri. The Rev. J. Belshaw, of Bombay, gave a helpful talk on " Conscious and Unconscious Influences in the Home and Institute." Mrs. D. J. L. Sharp, of Ramarama, demonstrated the art of bouquot-making. A presentation was made to Baby Tuohey, to whom goes the honour of being the first institute baby. The monthly competition—a child's vest- made from an old vest or pair of stockings—was won by Mrs. A. Brown, Miss Polken 2, Mrs. j. B, McKinney 3. The garments are to be sent to Sister Esther. The hostesses were Mrs. Foster, Mrs. J. Harrison and Mrs. J. Laurence.
Horsham Downs.—The first meeting of (he newly-formed institute at Horsham Downs was held recently. Mrs. Boyd (president), presided. Household hints were given at the roll call, and some unusual labour-saving ideas were heard for the first time. Mrs. Porter gave an interesting account, of the routine of their branch, Miss Hamilton displayed some beautiful specimens of point lace, and Mrs. Low (Gordonton) gave a demonstration of papier-mache and barbola work. Afternoon tea was handed round. Maunu. —The Maunu Institute held its meeting at, Mrs. J. M. Clarke's residence |nst> week. The Rev. 11. T. Steele gave an address on the " Customs of Japanese Women" and " Funeral Customs of Japan." Afternoon tea was dispensed after which followed a recipe roll-call. The competition for the best, plate of scones resulted in Mrs. J. 1. Wilson and Miss Carter tying for first points, with Mrs. Northwood second.
Mercury Bay.—At the March meeting of the institute a, word-building competition was von by Mrs. A. White. An exhibition of fancy work produced a very largo number of beautiful articles, ranging from work done 50 years ago to the modern stitches of to-day. It was decided to enter for the thrift table competition in Auckland in May. The hostesses were Mrs. Hinds, Mrs. 0. A. Wells, Miss Hamilton and Miss McLeod.
Wacrenga.—An enjoyable afternoon was spent'recently by the Waerenga Institute. A sorig was given by Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. W. B. Carter gave a humorous reading. A competition for points for the best four plain scones was won by Mrs. W. B. Carter. Miss M. Storey was the judge. A soap competition was very amusing and resulted in Mrs. W. 1 1 . Carter winning the prize. Three chairs were donated to the local hall by the institute members. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. A. Jefferis, Gardner, Fleming and Loftus.
